Gunnison was an inmportant exchange point between the D&RG and C&S. Until the Alpine Tunnel was closed and the D&RG took over the Baldwin branch, C&S coal cars would go and return from Leadville via Marshall Pass and Salida. At times when the Alpine Tunnel was closed and the C&S could not get coal cars to the Baldwin mines, they would use D&RG cars. A few times before the tunnel was closed, the D&RG used C&S cars on the Crested Butte branch when they were short of cars in Gunnison.
