And here's how they did it in Farmington in 1970 and 71. These are 2 high side gons converted to pipe service and a string of what appears to be flat cars. Cars were typically scrapped in place as the scrapper found them and after the metal parts were removed, the bodies were burned. In places like Alamosa, where the city wouldn't let the scrapper burn in the city, they took them out of town on the line to Antonito, took the cars off the track, and then burned the bodies along side the track, after steel removal. All the small parts could then be scooped up. I came across about 20 drop bottom gons with smoke still rising from the ashes one day and was so bothered by the sight that I refused to take a picture.
