Steve:
For new digital photographs being shot now, there is a way to determine what the orginal was before it was PhotoShopped. Professional quality (and some amatuer) cameras can shoot in what is called 'raw' format. This is what the camera sees without anything being done to it by the camera's electronics or Photoshop. It is like a digital negative. In fact, Adode is trying to promote a format called DNG. Which means Digital Negative Graphic. They are trying to do this because each of the camera makers uses a different raw format. Canon's raw files are different from Nikon's and Pentax is different....so on. Adobe wants them to all use the same format so that 50 years from now, you can still read the file. If this does not happen, it is possible that someday your PC will not read an old file if that file format has become obselete.
The real advantage of raw and DNG is that they are like negatives or original slides. You can see what the photographer started with to determine what was changed.
This doesn't do anything for film negs and slides that are scanned. But it will ensure truth and reality in digital photography for new images being shot.
