498 ended up in Alamosa in '68

October 12, 2005 10:51AM
Greg,
I am afraid you are wrong in saying that 498 ended up in Durango at the end of '68. It ended up in Alamosa and remained in what was left of the roundhouse, along with 493. They were in excellent condition, being stored indoors. The two of them were trucked to Durango, over Wolf Creek Pass when the D&RGW sold the Silverton line to Charlie Bradshaw. Due to outside storage, parts cannibalization, etc., they have not fared as well since.
So, Russ is right, the picture does show 498 on its last run.
