Just my own observations: The 490 was the original prototype of the K-37 class. Most of the time on any new piece of machinery, the pilot model is full of quirks and defects. Subsequent units constructed afterwards usually have the original problems improved or even eliminated. I'm sure this was probably the case with the 490. Comparing pictures of the 490 with other K-37s, the 490 seems to have many subtle differences from the other engines in its class (I. E. different tender, different fittings, slightly different cylinders, etc.) This "uniqueness" may have been one of the reasons the Grande decided to retire and strip her for parts instead of repairing her.
Interestingly, the 498 seemed to inherit one of the 490's unique cylinder covers on it's right cylinder.. Check out some of the later photos of 498.
