I can add a little to Charlie's recollection. I first saw the engine in San Francisco, at the small State Belt yard that was at the bottom of about Harrison Street, loaded on the flat car Charlie saw it on. It surprised the hell out of me to see it sitting there, as I was on lunch break headed to a little hole in the wall restaurant located next to one of the piers along the water front. Freight still moved in and out of some of the old piers during 66-67 along the Embarcadero. I next saw it in what I believe was a lumber yard, in the same location Charlie describes, between Alviso and Agnews. The engines and cars were fairly visible from the Mountain View-Alviso-Milpitas road, now a freeway. Bob Keller was already involved with the engine at this point, and in my files is a Palo Alto Times article about Keller and the equipment, including his railroad operations at Lake Tahoe that preceeded his Chama excursion.
I later saw the engine in Chama, and to be honest, never put it all together until the recent discussion on all this.
