Riding the rails in Mexico

April 19, 2005 03:20PM
Your story of your Mexican trip reminds me of a trip I took from Cd. Juarez to Mexico City on the train. Ernie Robart and I were part of a group that was on a mountain-climbing excursion. We had a Pullman compartment, ate great food in the diner, and consumed more cervezas than we should have in the lounge car (remember-don't drink the water!). Because it was after a major peso devaluation, it was all obscenely cheap. Steam was all gone then, but lots of other interesting ex-U.S. equipment, including Alcos. It was a great rail trip. I wish I could do it again, but I understand that there are very few passenger trains running in Mexico anymore.
