I would hope that us rich Gringo's don't go looting a small country's railroad heritage so that somebody here can play trains. If stuff is brought north and put to good use, like the ex-IRCA 40 and 44, that's probably a net good. But if it is going to rust or rot away in somebody's backyard railroad or psuedo museum, then arguably it has more value rusting or rotting away where it was used. At least there the industrial archeologists and historians can get some benefit from it. A couple of nice pieces of ex-IRCA equipment come to mind here.
Some serious historic preservation has started in the area. The former Central Station in Guatemala City has been turned into a very nice museum, and the vast ex-IRCA backshop is intact and preserved, with parts in use by Ferrovias Guatemala....it is an amazing place to visit. Probably the biggest and best preserved steam railroad backshop in the America's.
