Cuscatlan was pretty derelict in Colorado. It wasn't the fault of the S&S, though.
When the hired "guard" for the equipment (44, 111 and Cuscatlan) in its movement through Mexico ran off, the locals stripped the equipment of all of the brass and metal that would fetch any money at all. When you're talking about a business car, that's a lot of parts. Don Drawer never had the kind of money that it takes to replace that kind of loss.
This is why the 44 had Sellers Injectors and a D&RGW 5 chime whistle as well as replacement steam and air gauges. The originals had been stolen on their journey through Mexico. I guess that the Mexicans figured that these, too were shanghaied "National Treasures". (or they just needed the money)
