We did a lot of driving. Remember its about 2400 miles to the west coast. We then drove to Portland, and did some stuff in between. When chasing Amtrak there were times when you would get shots about every 50 miles. Not uncommon for chasing steam or Amtrak in the open west.
I have had similar 10,000 mile trips in my own vehicles. 1989 western trip was Ohio to Portland, OR, chase 4449 to LA, then 4449 to Fresno, did some other stuff, then back to Portland. Portland to Bend with 8444, then followed 8444 1200 miles to Cheyenne, then home to Ohio. All this with a 20 month old.
1992 Similar trip to Washington, then in Western Canada 4 weeks. Any time I go out west it turns into 8-10K it seems. Thats why I am particular these days when I go that direction
