What were you trying to replicate - The Donner Party????

I have had some cold winter experiences, the coldest being 1 sold week of -25 to -35 degree temps in Eastern Canada in 1987, while shooting the last of the F-Units. Fluid head tripod would not pan, so I finally hand held the third shot of the commuter train. Later was shooting a scene near North Bay, Ont. and took my glove off to use the zoom on the camera. Nearly lost a couple of fingers. They hurt for 30 minutes or more.
We had trouble finding lodging in North Bay....there was a trappers convention going on! Go Figure!
We brought some caffeine free diet pop with us, and most of it exploded in the trunk of the car and froze there. Car wouldn't start three days in a row(but then most of the Canadians at the Motel didn't either). I learned that -35 is the same for C and F at that point. The good news was the entire week was cloud free, if you could get through the cold temps.
Shooting the Rotary on Cumbres in 91 and 93 was tough too. 97 was not as bad as I had a snowmobile to help conserve some energy. Snow shots are fun, once you are home in the warmth watching the results. Otherwise its not so fun!
Glad I didn't miss the Rotary runs though or the stuff in Canada.
Cheers,
Greg Scholl
PS...John...how was the Nevada Northern trip?
