Hey, I've got a car rental story and it's actually ng. related. In September 1965 four of us rented a Budget car is Santa Fe for a trip to Durango. On our last day we were chasing a train from Durango to Chama and were coming over the hill on the dirt road between Gato and Juanita, when we knocked a hole in the oil pan. We walked to a farm house in Juanita and were greeted by an elderly gentleman who invited us in. He said we were welcome to use the phone that had been installed just the week before. So we called Budget and ordered a tow truck from Durango. Turns out the gentlemen was a retired section foreman on the ng. While we waited for the tow truck and drank lemonade, we discussed the problems of the world, and our host proved to be a very well informed and insightful person. One of my companions mentioned that he had to get to the Durango airport to catch a plane, so our host volunteered to drive him into Durango so he could retrieve his bags from the hotel and then take him to the airport. The rest of us waited for the tow truck. Our car was duly towed to Durango, we were given another car, and completed our trip uneventfully. Most interestly, we never got a bill from Budget for the tow or the repair. Needless to say, I'm still a pretty loyal Budget customer. And just this year I drove through Juanita and looked for our host's farm house, but couldn't find any place that fit my 40 year old memories.
