Funny you mention it...the Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources out at Ardenwood Farm (Newark, CA) set up their gift shop in an impeccably-restored South Pacific Coast boxcar!
The PLA did the same, only with a standard-gauge boxcar. The git shop was one of the better-stocked around; and wasn't too cramped, either.
The CHS might as well make their beloved "Crystal Palace" into a giant gift shop, since it isn't good for much else. "We don't have a train in 2005, but we sure do have a fine, large, and well-stocked tourist railroad gift shop!"
