The repair is actually fairly simple once the boiler is lifted. I had never heard about 476's 70's wreck in Silverton or the 483 debocle. I know that a lot of enginemen (firemen in particular) don't like 83 because it "fires and acts like a 37." 340 is in fairly good shape because she was known as a hardfiring, poor steamer and still is to some extent. RGS beat the living daylights out of their engines is snow service. My question with 476 is why didn;t the D&RGW replace that wedge or whatever before this got to be a huge problem. Maybe the C&TS could trade 494 or 495 to Royal Gorge in exchange for 499. I have always been a fan of 499 and would like to see it in steam again.
