I think the 483 was originally called to run to Chama with a short freight after shoving the dragline down the Farmington line. My pix show it leaving Durango shoving the dragline but also with a short freight of boxcars (presumably Weidman lumber) and a caboose, which were left at Carbon Junction while they shoved the dragline down the branch. The work location was not far from the junction. After spotting the dragline they returned to the junction, made up their train, and headed for Chama. But once they discovered the slip out at 446.2 (sharp eyed engine crew!) the original orders were presumably busted and new work extra orders issued to cover movements back and forth to Carbon Junction and Durango. Assuming this is correct, it is interesting that the original orders were deleted from the trainsheet. Of course there may be more on the trainsheet than Jimmy is transcribing. An interesting day on the ng.
Here is the short freight with the 487 that finally got through the next day after shoving a couple more gons of slag to the slip out, dumping them, setting out the gons at Falfa, and then contining on to Chama picking up some additional cars off sidings enroute. Location is about MP 445, I think the new hospital would be in the background now (thanks to Floppo and Joe for the correction). I wonder if the Alamosa crew had to say at Chama an extra day waiting for these cars.
It is fascinating how much info is available to reconstruct these events almost 60 years later. And thanks again to Jimmy for his efforts to provide this for us. White window frames on the caboose....must be Myron.
