There are various threads/sources that suggest that Mr Hughes (Gramps) leased 20 UTLX tank cars and had them painted with his nickname.

If so, that suggests that Mr Hughes still controlled the oil as it was loaded into his leased tank cars.

Perhaps Mr Hughes owned the land in Alamosa the refinery was on or had some financial interest in it??
(I have not tried to figure out exactly where those parcels were located.)
Of course, there is always some possibility that Mr Hughes didn't really control the those tank cars and "someone" (the refinery, perhaps) painted them simply as a courtesy to Mr Hughes.
