Since Tom rarely – if ever – posts here -
And since he provided me with hi-res .tif copies of nearly all of his narrow gauge slides a few years ago, I'll save all of you the trouble of digging through
The Friends archives by posting just a few of his shots.
This first one shows what John refers to as a "unit train" of tank cars, narrow-gauge style. IIRC, 11 loads was the maximum for a pair of K-36s or '37s from Chama to Cumbres. Judging by the lighting, this shot from October 21, 1962, looks like an afternoon 'Cumbres Turn'

The following spring Tom caught a flanger-spreader train returning east on March 14, 1963. Rather than waste all that power on a light train, eight cars of oil were added from Chama to Cumbres

SFAIK, the oil was left at the summit for a following freight, and the snow train cleared the sidings at Los Pinos, Osier, Toltec and Sublette on its way to Alamosa.
One week later he caught another flanger-spreader run arriving in Chama. Per Tom, the train was more than 24 hours late after fighting deep drifts and several derailments on its way west

Returning east the following day, it again lightened the load of a following eastbound freight by hauling eight cars of GRAMP
S oil as far as Cumbres
