Hi Everett et al -

It turns out that there was a fairly long thread on the subject of the tank cars about 6½ years ago, on which Russo Loco Wrote (at [ngdiscussion.net]):

Apparently some of the frameless cars did travel on the RGS — but only from Durango to Mancos and before they were leased to, and lettered for, Lafayette "GRAMPS" Huges.  They were used to haul road oil used in the paving of U.S. 160 west of Mancos in 1937-39 and later to haul road oil for a paving project near Iola.  (Where the @#$%& is Iola?)

IIRC, Hughes leased 14 of the 25 frameless tank cars on a long-term basis to save money versus 'per-diem' charges to UTLX for their use.  As to why only 14, and why only the frameless cars, I have no idea.

IMHO, in spite of the source of this link (Roosso), it may be worth checking out . . .
