My September 5 visit was in 1963, rather than in 1964, and John Gruber's was in August 1963. If your photo was taken in September 1964, the only feasible date would have been September 2. On that day 487 and 484 headed west from Alamosa, matching 487 and another K36 as in the photo. On other westbound runs out of Alamosa in September 1964, engine 487 was paired with 490s. The Oriental Refinery shut down sometime in September 1964, but most likely sometime after September 2, so that a long string of empty tank cars could still be expected to run early in that month.
