I think both Dave's and my posts were intended to be
fanciful,
but I don't know why there would need to to be a freight "transfer" from narrow-gauge to standard-gauge cars. The point of 3 rails is that (with an idler car)
both standard gauge and narrow gauge equipment could be in the same train, similar to ye olden days ...
