In August 2008, my son and I were headed for Chama on a Saturday afternoon, when the fuel pump on my Chevy pickup gave up the ghost on La Veta Pass. Facing a long weekend in Alamosa or Walsenburg, we elected to get towed to Alamosa. What to do on Sunday? We bought tickets on the SLRG to ride to Antonito, then we connected with the C&TS for an Osier Turn. It was an interesting ride down the Valley beside highway 17, and back then they tried to do 30 MPH which got us there in an hour.
They had one of the ex-Alaska domes on the train. Great views. Unfortunately, my son and I were the only passengers. I think the SLRG crew stayed in Antonito between 10AM and 5PM, so I would imagine our fares didn't even pay for their wages for that time, much less the fuel or other expenses. There was no freight that day.
It was a great idea, but I don't think many passengers rode that trip.
