The Guayaquil & Quito operated three 2-6-2+2-6-2 Garrats between 1929 and probably into the 1960s. I have ever only found one photo of these Garrats. They weighed 135 tons and had 43,000 pounds of tractive effort.
Mike Allen sent me an interesting PM with some amazing info about the disposition of at least one of these Garrats, and I quote in part:
" The steam engine that powered the shop machinery was one engine from a Beyer Garrat. The Garrat boiler sat off to one side. A Garrat rear bunker was mounted outside on a stand to supply oil for the boiler. The front tank from a garrat was located at one end of the wye at Yaguache. One of the engine units from a wreck was still visible down in the river in the canyon part way to Huigra."
I never had much of an opportunity to poke around the shop, so I have to admire Mike for finding all this amazing gear.
Finally, as a parting shot, here is a photo of the Cotopaxi volcano taken after our train arrived in Quito
