Michael, your comment about the Bucay hotel reminded me of another scary feature of some hotels in Ecuador. Our pretty nice hotel in Alausi had a hot water system that I had read about in a guide book before the trip, and that I found here in real life:
My limited recall of electrical engineering class at NMSU makes me think that one should turn the water on first and then throw the switch to avoid overheating the pipe or causing a steam explosion.
In any case I don't believe I ever wanted a hot shower badly enough to use this suicidal contraption. In an extreme case, a cold shower seems preferable to electrocution
