Climbing back on to the baggage car roof, we rode to the upper switchback tail for another runby (movie frames only in this section, as Helen only took landscape photos here)
From the Devil's Nose switchbacks the railroad grade, continuing to climb steeply, was carved into the mountain slope. With the Chan Chan river bed rising even more steeply, eventually the grade met the river level and crossed to the other side, starting the approach to the Alausi Loops.
.
Here is a rough sketch map of the Alausi Loops. The loops are reminiscent of the Whiplash on the C&TS, but much steeper at a grade of 5.6 % versus 1.42 %.
Approaching the loops after crossing the river. The train had dropped the group off on the middle level and backed here on a runby.
