Re: Spending the night in Bucay - we missed out on the "Bucay Hilton", going from Duran to Alausi in one day, and that appears to have been a good thing
Re: Roof riding thru the Chan Chan canyon tunnels. In a short tunnel you just had to lie down and hold your breath for a little while until you were out. The need to lie low was especially critical on the roof of the baggage car, as it was taller than the top of the tender
It was always a relief to be out of the tunnel. But there was one tunnel I thought would never end - the "air" was too hot to breathe, too steamy, and full of smoke - air you wouldn't dare to inhale, but you knew that eventually you would have to. Clearly we survived, but for a time that seemed in doubt.
Luckily there was only one scary tunnel. Our first water stop in the canyon was at the biggest locomotive water tank I have ever seen - probably needed during busier times with many thirsty engines
My daughter was certainly impressed by all that water rushing into the tender
Some of that water was promptly vaporized during our next photo runby
