But, what if the day comes when the railroad can not operate for a season due to fire conditions?

You would rather have the railroad closed, and all the negative side effects of this? I personally would rather see a small quartet of DL535s pinch hitting in times like this, and used at other times on short turns to Cumbres.

I do not think anyone on this forum who is discussing diesels at C&TS is advocating replacing steam in any shape of form. Diesels would give the railroad a fighting chance of keeping people employed in extreme fire conditions.
