I don't respond too much on here, but I read everything posted every day. This is a subject that I just cannot pass up though.
There are comparisons being made between C&TS and D&S but those are "apples and oranges". Both run on NG tracks originally laid by the Rio Grande, utilize Baldwin K-36 and K-37 steam locomotives, run through the beautiful Rocky Mountains (and as such, through National Forests), and their main source of revenue is the tourists that come into town to ride down their respective rails. But that is where the similarities end. D&S is a for profit tourist railroad. And just like pretty much every other tourist railroad out there, their primary goal is to keep the railroad running, in whatever way possible, to maximize the tourist revenue. I am NOT knocking D&S. I commend them for making the tough decisions that will hopefully keep them running for years to come. But unlike D&S, C&TS is a living museum and is listed as a Historical Site and as such, they must adhere to specific guidelines when it comes to making any changes to the railroad. I believe everything stated so far is proven fact, but if anything is in error, please correct me.
Now for my opinion, which as such, is not open for debate or discussion. With C&TS being what it is, diesels have NO place there. 15 and 19 are ok because all they do are a few work trains and yard switching. Save the steam (and coal) for the paying passengers. Real road diesels on the line would forfeit the historical accuracy and destroy the living museum aspect it is built on. If you want to ride behind a diesel, go to the D&S. If you want to ride behind real authentic early 20th century coal fired steam, go to C&TS. Personally, I think that with all the changes D&S is making, they are indirectly future proofing the C&TS because there are going to be those of us that want the authentic experience, and that experience will only be available at the C&TS. As for the idea of C&TS conversion to oil burning, if it is allowable under the rules and guidelines for historical accuracy, I will live with it.
If you really want to future proof C&TS, you need to add to the historically accurate museum experience. Instead of spending mega $$$ on diesels, build a museum down by the wye on Chama. Make it a destination for tourists in the event there is an interruption in the running trains and maybe even keep it open during the off season so that the revenue can continue to trickle in.
