Yes John, there are a lot of useful lessons here for all concerned, and it seems to me that those lessons have been taken to heart. In my humble opinion, the greatest lesson learned out of those days when Scenic was running the railroad was that the operating company should work with the commission and not attempt things behind their back. Happily, the railroad and the Commission now work hand-in-hand, as does the Friends with both.
I really feel that we at the NGRRA were caught in the middle between Scenic and the commission. We were, for the most part, the only ones reporting on happenings at the railroad. I felt we were not trying to “get” Scenic; just innocently reporting the facts and events after the fact as we saw them. It only blew up when the commissioners became aware of activities they knew nothing about. If it hadn’t been our reporting, the commissioners would have found out somewhere else.
