I remember when I first became active with the Friends around 1999, those early problems Bill described were used as an example of why we (the Friends volunteers) needed to not get crosswise with the railroad operating company. In my mind that was a very useful interpretation of those earlier events, since the volunteers and the operating company do not always have exactly the same view of the world for any number of good reasons. And I think over the years that healthy respect has grown into an excellent and mutually supportive working relationship.
