I understand that the first South Africa railroads were built by the Dutch and were standard gauge. Then when the British took over they converted to 42" gauge. This being the reason for the generous loading gauge in South Africa.
I once had a New Zealand modeler say that that their mainline railroad was able to make use of some 2nd hand equipment from England because the English were trying to run standard-gauge trains with a narrow-gauge loading gauge!
