Just like the D&RGW, the Newfoundland Railway gravitated to larger Mikes for their mainline freight and passenger services. Numbers 1000-1001 were built by Alco in 1930, and then North British built 1002-1006 between 1935 and 1938. These locos replaced a lot of the old tenwheelers that were definitely life-expired by the Depression years.
Maybe it's because of their British heritage, but none of these engines seemed to sport smokebox number plates as delivered in their Newfoundland Railway days. They were renumbered into the 300 series in 1949 and received the colourful CNR red and yellow number plates. In a lingering British practice however, most of the locos sported red pilot beams on each side of the cowcatcher, just like the buffers on many English locos.
