For many years the official paint scheme for D&RGW steam locomotives was
Cab exterior, black Duco.
Cab interior, medium green.
Cylinders, pilots, running gear, black enamel
Smoke box. fire box, front-end paint
Boiler and cylinder jackets, dark olive green enamel.
Lettering, tire rims. edge of running board, aluminum paint.
Tender, black Duco.
I have been told this was for standard gauge locomotives and not narrow gauge ones.
I read that the NG shops often did things their own way when it comes to paint.
In black and white photos I agree it is impossible to reliably say what color a particular object is, however aluminum trim on the running board edges and tire rims stands out really well even in black and white photos.
I also agree that NG locomotives were not always painted as described above, but I've seen enough evidence to convince me that sometimes they were.
340 in the above photo is largely as the above paint scheme as indicates. When I see a black and white photo of a DRGW narrow gauge steam locomotive which clearly shows the aluminum tire trim and running board paint, (and I've seen several) I feel it is safe to assume that the above paint scheme was followed and the boiler jacket and possibly cylinder jackets are dark olive green enamel.
