Not to re-kindle a decades old argument but, in the early 1900's many engines were manufactured with green or gray boilers along with "russia iron.. All arguments aside, coal burning railroads obviously saw no need to try to keep engines cleaned enough to show "the colors" as coal burners would turn any paint job a dusty, dirty black within days. Multi color jobs were more time consuming and expensive to apply. Still, they are nice looking when clean.

Now let the flame shooters begin while I duck and cover my head.
