MUCH younger, John -
Steve Forney has suggested in a p.m. that Ernie may have followed a ranch road or hunters/fishers track east along the south side of the Los Pinos, which may have been a remnant of the old Toll Road that had survived (sort of) from the 'olden days'. Once near the trestle, he would have climbed up the hill across from it. The following photo is frame 09 between helper #483 crossing the trestle (frame 04 of the roll) and #493 crossing with her train (frame 18 of the roll), so I'm guessing it wasn't as challenging a climb as Half-Dome in Yosemite (although I could be wrong)
