Thank You, John -
Ernie doesn't post here, and SFAIK doesn't even read the NGDF (I really don't understand why not), so I'll pass your compliments along to him.
Perhaps I didn't make it clear in my captions, but the photos look like Ernie quit chasing #493's last run up the hill a mile or two below Cresco, and then drove to the spot overlooking Cascade Trestle on the road that crosses the tracks at Apache Crossing and then heads southeast across Cumbres Creek and then up into the forest to the south of El Rio de los Pinos. He would have had a fair amount of time, as #493 would have had to add that morning's Cumbres Turn to her train after getting to the top of the pass, while #483 took water and then dropped the caboose for #493 to pick up before heading east. (#483 probably did a "flying drop" of the caboose so it would coast to a coupling with the rear of the train, but Ernie wasn't there to witness it. (See your post at [
ngdiscussion.net] and my reply at [
ngdiscussion.net].) Too bad Roger and his drone weren't around back then

p.s. I just received another big batch of negatives from Ernie covering #498's run from Durango to Chama on 08/28/68 and #483's run from Chama to Durango on the following day, plus the last delivery to - and return from - Farmington on 08/31/68 (the latter being the very last revenue freight operation on the San Juan Extension). Olaf has also sent some negs that should fill in any gaps of my own coverage of the last freights over Cumbres Pass on 08/28-29/68. I'll try to get at least some of these processed before I leave for Chama on August 21 so that hopefully I can post photos of the Last Freights on their 50th Anniversary dates of 08/28, 29 and 31, but don't hold your breath
