Someone will probably correct me, but, I heard it was when the Labato bridge burned, and they had to unload a locomotive up there.
The north, or Los Pinos end of the siding may have been split up some time before, probably when the highway was put in.
Towards Los Pinos, in the parking lot, before the road, the rails still stick up a little in the gravel. But it's an unattached piece of track, the spur being zapped closer to the brake inspector's house when the locomotive was unloaded. At the bottom of the picture, you can see the remnants of the removed rail.
