The railroads once had a number of reduced rate tickets. But, these were often not honored on the "top end" trains. Here is a notation in a Santa Fe public timetable from Dec 18, 1938:
Quote
Rules for the Super Chief, Trains 17 and 18, the Chief, Trains 19 and 20 and El Capitan trains 21 and 22
On trains 17 and 18 , also on trains 19 and 20, and on trains 21 and 22, tickets bearing the following endorsements will not be honored "Special," "Special Rate," "Employee," "Charity," "D.V.S.," " Homeseekers," "Second Class," "Immigrant," "Drovers' tickets or Stock Contracts." "Clergy" tickets (first class only) reading from Hutchinson or east, to authorized stops in Arizona or California, and vice-versa, will be honored on trains 19 and 20.
I have carefully copied the wording, capitalization, and punctuation.
The Santa Fe timetable was immediately handy. I've seen similar notation in the timetables of other western roads.
