On the ATSF, there was a drovers car in the consist to aid with this process. I assume other western roads did the same. So a new question. Were drovers used on the narrow gauge? I know sheep compared to cattle are a different animal but I believe the rules were the same. So to add to these thoughts, were stock movements to cumbres done as the tank and lumber loads? Thus maybe needing drovers at cumbres to deal with the stock until the entire train was assembled? Or was stock only added if it was the third or last turn?
How about the C&S lines? Did they have much stock movements?
