Not sure about Montrose, but at Salida the stock was transferred at Cleora just south of Salida on the mainline to Pueblo. There was a water tank there for watering the stock and it was still standing in the 70s. One side of the pens was narrow gauge and the other standard gauge. They had to unload the narrow gauge cars anyway due to laws about how long the stock could be in a car. I think it was the same at Alamosa. One of the reasons they build the line from Alamosa to Antonito dual gauge and Alamosa to Hooper was so that stock could be loaded directly into standard gauge stock cars. I saw a photo once of a D&RGW FT A-B-B-A pulling a long string of standard gauge stock cars on the dual gauge south of Alamosa.
