Fortunately, Cougars don't hunt humans and attacks are pretty rare. Cats are usually looking for defenseless prey, not a fight. My understanding is that if you are attacked, the strategy is different than with bears. With a cat, you fight back with everything you have and protect your neck. I'm told that most people who have fought the animal have survived. Obviously, seeing the animal in time to assume a defensive posture is key. Keep your eyes open while out chasing the narrow gauge in the Rockies. BTW, the smaller cats, such as Bobcat and Lynx are no threat and will flee unless cornered (or rabid). Good luck if you can get your lens on one. They are beautiful cats.
