I used to volunteer at a local Warbird museum. Fact is a lot of these aircraft are cobbled together from various airplanes. Then its not sure which airplane they really are, so they generally name them whatever they want, representing and era or another plane that did exist. I believe Fifi was named after the relative of the guy who put up the most money for its restoration. The B-25 at the local museum is said to be the last built B-25 that is still around, yet only about 40-50% of it is original to that aircraft. My point is that many of these warbirds still flying are not 100% the original aircraft now anyway, so nothing is being destroyed by using it as far as originality is concerned. Collings Foundation has planes that have had different names and paint jobs over the years. A steam engine on display is nothing more than a dead relic from a bygone era. An operational steam engine or Warbird are coming back to life so we can all experience them once again or for the first time.
Just back from a steam excursion this past weekend. Great to see live steam once again.
