Folks,
I read the RYPN thread the other day and it struck me as self serving rather than adding to the historical threads that I think most of us are interested in.
Most railroad museums operate their equipment of whatever sort. Mainly because riding behind a steam locomotive or a streetcar is not a very common occurrence.
I believe that the amount of wear and tear on the artifact is far less than what it would have gotten in regular operation in a commercial setting.
Secondly, we are all in the business of historical education; even if it is considered an informal setting. I have been interested in Industrial Archaeology since I was in my teens over 50 years ago.
I am very happy that a lot of museums made it possible to see and ride in vehicles that went away before I was born. My local streetcar line close in 1924.
