I'm not so sure, Greg -
I've seen a lot of really old photos that are just as sharp – if not sharper – than many taken with much newer cameras. Some of those old 4x5 negs are so sharp you can almost read the newspaper that the conductor is holding while he waits for the local l.c.l freight to be loaded into the baggage car. It may be just a tiny bit too contrasty for an older photo, but I don't think it's necessarily too sharp – unless John intended it to represent one that I took with my plastic-lensed Brownie Hawkeye circa 1956 or so
