Hi,
I am looking for a web hosting site I like to post these model content items for those who are not interested in the models nearly as much as the prototype. I've not chosen one yet.
That said, there is apparently a lot of interest in what I am doing.
The frames for the class 35 and class 42 locomotives were 3D printed. I offer a few photos of them here. They were inspired by the old Far East Distributor's Spartan Series line from the 1970s and were actually (I think) backed by Northwest Short Line.
In these first two photos of the class 42 frame, you can see how the Spartan parts fit the new chassis. With the driver spacing different between the two models, It was not a direct fit with the Spartan side rods being a bit longer. However, the cylinders, drivers, and worm assembly fit quite well into the class 42 frame.
Although hard to see, the first photo shows the 3D plastic frame for the class 42 4-4-0 with the FED Spartan brass 4-4-0 frame in the back. The pilot truck for the Spartan can bee seen behind the class 42 frame and the FED cylinders. I specified that the hole for hole that passes through the cylinder mount be clear for the boiler mounting screw but it came way too small - a frequent issue I have with 3D printing - holes are not as big as they were specified. However, the 3D printed part served its purpose well - it proved several concepts to be good and showed where certain items needed to be adjusted. It was less expensive than to have a brass casting made.
These next two photos of the class 35 2-6-0 shows once again, the cylinders and drivers and worm gear fit well into the frame. I did get the class 25 frame printed but I sent the wrong file - It did not have the driver slots in it. Kinda hard to build a locomotive with no wheels
Otherwise, it came out just like the class 35 and class 42 frames - proved some concepts, found mistakes and hit the mark for being a worthwhile expense.
I hope you found it interesting. This is the sort of thing I've always like to do - finding an idea and creating a final working product.
