An interesting story in relation to the four early D&RG 16 foot long, 4 wheel passenger equipment (Baggage/Mail A and B; Smoking cars 1 and 2) of 1871. After they arrived, it was quickly determined that they were just too short for any regular passenger service and longer and larger coaches were quickly ordered from Jackson & Sharp. I have long believed that these four cars became the first cabooses of the Rio Grande, but had no real proof until I discovered a May 1873 Inventory notation (for the year 1872) for four "calaboose" cars. I'm covering all this in the new book on D&RG...The Early Days, due out next year from White River Publications.
