Hi,
As many know, work on some models of the early 1871 era 4-wheel passenger cars has been under way (as has some of the early D&RG locos).
I have ordered three models.
According to history as I understand it, there were two (2) 4-wheel baggage cars and two (2) 4-wheel smokers. After they proved to be too small, the four cars were rebuilt to by early cabooses (way cars).
I have sent them to the 3D printer Shapeways for production.
Here are the 3D CAD images FYI.
The original Railroad Model Craftsman drawing was made from a photo. It was very non-specific for the 1871 smoking car. These are 15 foot cars. I have one partial photo of the way car on the DSP&P. Based upon the CAD system I have and other constraints, there are only two (2) windows per side. Could there have been three (3) - yes. For the way car roof, I'm using the standard Baggage/smoker roof although the photo seems to show the roof just covering the way car body and not the platforms.
This is not the finished model. I still need to see if NWSL has wheel sets and what I need to do to adjust my model to use NWSL wheel sets.
Thanks for listening.
