One of the most interesting history courses I took in collage was "The history of Technology." It covered how changes in technology changed hisory (in minor ways or in major ways) and those changes created new needs that drove new changes in technology.

I find the history of those early years of the D&RG narrow gauge a microcosm of interesting decisions driven by need.
