A great example of "entirely too much work" was the K-27's that went to the NdeM in Mexico and got converted to standard gauge in the 1950's About the only thing that got saved was the boiler, and side frames. Everything else had to be replaced. In the end they ended up with a 60-ton 2-8-2 with a 55 year old boiler. They must had some branch line that suited those engines perfectly.
