Greg, get a Route 66 book, (there are a million of them) and circle the towns that are worth getting off the interstate and using the business loop through the main streets. Although much of the old landmarks are gone now, there are still some gems out there worth seeing while they are still there.
We drove out to Chama from the L.A. area and back for session E and it is a 15 or so hour drive each way so splitting the trip into two days will give you some sightseeing time.
Russ is right, the Santa Fe tracks parallel I40 much of the way and it is amazing how many trains you will see during your drive. Most of the bridges still have the Santa Fe logo on them, (the Friends need to use whatever paint the Santa Fe bridge crews used, that stuff LASTS!)
