Lots of other uses for recycled rail. Here at the Southern Forest Heritage Museum, the family abandoned the Red River and Gulf RR and much of the woods railroad in 1954. Much of the rail was sold, but quite a bit was stockpiled for future use. When the mill was remodeled in 1957, the stockpiled rail was used for the framing of the green chain, wood drying racks, and the framing of the finished and green lumber sheds. In 2010 we used the rail off of the drying racks to build about 5000' of track. Most of that rail was Tennessee Steel 1914 60# rail, so it got used for 40 years as railroad rail, 53 years as lumber drying racks, and now 6 more years as railroad rail.
